In New York, Columbia GSAPP announced today that Lydia Kallipoliti will be the next director of the school’s Master of Science in Advanced Architectural Design (AAD) program. Previously, Kallipoliti was associate professor at the Irwin S. Chanin School of Architecture of the Cooper Union.

AAD is a three-semester program that regularly attracts students and educators from across the globe. Andrés Jaque was the AAD program’s previous director; Jaque vacated the role in 2022 when he was named dean of Columbia GSAPP. Kallipoliti will take over in September, just in time for the start of the fall semester.

“Professor Kallipoliti’s arrival at Columbia GSAPP reinforces the School’s leadership in developing new tools and approaches to addressing urgent contemporary challenges and impacting society and ecosystems through design,” GSAPP said in a statement.

Kallipoliti’s departure from Cooper Union marks the second exit by an Irwin S. Chanin School of Architecture faculty member this summer. The first was Elisa Iturbe who will begin her role as assistant professor at Harvard GSD this fall.

Before her time at Cooper Union, Kallipoliti held teaching positions at Princeton University, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Syracuse University, and the University of Technology Sydney, among other schools.

Kallipoliti was educated at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in Greece. She received a Master of Science in design and building technology from MIT, and then a PhD in history and theory of architecture from Princeton University.
